A 2025 Brookings Institution study found that 74% of 3rd graders reported loving school, but that number drops to 42% by the time most students enter middle school. By the 10th grade, only 26% of students report loving school. Similarly, the report found that in 3rd grade, 86% of students reported learning a lot in school; this declined to 67% in 6th grade and to 44% by 10th grade.
